In the CBT Skills Group, clients focus on gaining awareness of automatic thoughts. Automatic thoughts often lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, depression, fear and anger. By identifying automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions, clients are able to become more aware of these thoughts and thus challenge and replace automatic thoughts with healthier, more constructive thinking. Discussion topics often include understanding the consequences of “should” thinking, how to identify productive versus unproductive worrying, how to become more aware of assumption-making, how to determine how underlying beliefs lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and self destructiveness, how to modify perfectionistic thinking and how to identify patterns of limited thinking.
